Senior Staff Scientist in the Materials Science Division
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Miquel Salmeron is a Senior Staff Scientist in the Materials Science Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Adjunct Professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on surfaces and nanomaterials. Research topics include single molecule processes (reactions, diffusion, growth) using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Nano-tribology using Atomic Force Microscopy, water-surface interactions, structure of nanoparticle catalysts under reaction conditions using X-ray spectroscopies, and molecular electronics. He has developed novel instrumentation that makes possible in situ studies of surfaces in gas and liquid environments, including High Pressure Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Ambient Pressure Photoelectron Spectroscopy. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and American Vacuum Society. In 2004 he received the Klaus Halbach Award for innovative instrumentation and in 2008 the Medard Welch Award of the American Vacuum Society, the Langmuir Lectureship Award of the American Chemical Society, and in 2012 the MRS Medal.
